Trafalgar Dinner
Wednesday 12 October 2016
This was an excellent evening and members and guests enjoyed listening to Commodore Jonathan Cooke OBE give a talk. Born in 1943 Jonathan Cooke was educated at Summerfields School and at Marlborough College before joining the Royal Navy in 1961. After training as a Seaman Officer at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth he had early exposure to warfare in Indonesia before becoming a submarine and navigation specialist. He served in a variety of Diesel electric and nuclear powered submarines during the Cold War before commanding HMS WARSPITE during the Falkland war for which he was awarded an OBE. He subsequently commanded a submarine squadron, as well as being responsible for training submariners at sea.Jonathan Cooke was Naval Attaché in Paris from 1990-1993 (he is bilingual in French and fluent in Italian) where he was involved in defence diplomacy as well as the basic tasks of naval liaison. In late 1993, after membership of the 1993 course of the Royal College of Defence Studies, he became a Director of Intelligence at the Ministry of Defence as a Commodore, supervising a staff of 150 and was involved in the Bosnian and other crises.He became Clerk to the Leathersellers’ Company on 1st May 1996.

Candidate’s Reception and Dinner
This was held in the Club on Wednesday 21 September and was a very good evening. The dinner served in the Dining Room after the reception was well attended by both members and prospective new members. They all enjoyed the delicious cuisine served. All the candidate’s present on the evening were very keen to join and around 12 new members that were signed into the candidate’s book on the night. The next Candidate’s Reception and Dinner will be in held in early 2017. Date to be confirmed.

The daughter of a grape farmer, Kathleen Burk is Professor Emerita of Modern and Contemporary History, University College London, a judge for the International Wine and Spirits Competition, Membership Secretary of the trade body, the Circle of Wine Writers, and on the Board of the Wine Guild of the United Kingdom. She is also the author (with Michael Bywater) of Is This Bottle Corked? The Secret Life of Wine, and is responsible for the sections on Austria, Germany and Virginia for the wine guide Wine Behind the Label.
